Our Guide to Festive Holiday Cocktails

It’s time to pull out your bar tools and skills, because there’s no better time to show them off than the holidays! Sure, ‘tis the season for eating too much and maxing out the credit cards. But all we really want to do is drink a great cocktail with friends and family.

Here are some of our favorite cold weather cocktails. Don’t worry, we’ll keep the recipes simple and the drinks strong. Salut!

Winter Sangria 

1 bottle sweet red wine

1 bottle sparkling cranberry-apple cider

2 tangerines, sliced thin with peel on

2 granny smith apples, cored and diced

1/2 cup pomegranate arils 

1 cup halved cranberries

Rosemary (to garnish glasses) 

Directions: Mix cider, wine and fruit in pitcher. Serve over ice and garnish with rosemary. 

Pair with: Roast Cod Filet with Brown Butter, Garlic & Lemon, Parsley Potatoes and Steamed Vegetables

 

Snowy Bourbon Smash

2 Tbsp preserves of choice (ex. Blackberry, raspberry)

1 Tbsp triple sec

2 Tbsp bourbon

3 Tbsp orange juice

Orange slices

Splash of club soda 

Directions: Add 1/2 cup ice, preserves, bourbon, triple sec and OJ to a shaker and shake for 20 seconds. Pour into glass with a few ice cubes and add a splash of club soda and garnish with orange slices. 

Pair with: Buttermilk Pan Fried Chicken with Grits, Collard Greens and Tasso Ham Gravy

 

Cranberry-Mint Juleps

1 cup water

¾ cup sugar

2 strips fresh orange peel

1 cup fresh cranberries

1 cup bourbon

8 sprigs fresh mint

Directions: Bring water, sugar and orange peel in a saucepan to a boil on high heat. Add cranberries. Remove from heat once cranberries split and pop (2-3 minutes). Refrigerate until cold. 

Strain cranberry syrup and discard solids. Mix syrup with bourbon. Garnish with cranberry spears (3 raw cranberries on a toothpick) and fresh mint. 

Pair with: Spicy Seafood Linguini with Garlic, Tomato and Parsley

 

Blood Orange Mimosas

2 cups fresh blood orange juice

1 bottle dry Prosecco 

Fresh blood orange slices for garnish

Directions: Pour ¼ cup juice into each champagne flute and top with Prosecco. Garnish with a slice of blood orange. 

Pair with: Fish Camp Shrimp and Creamy Grits with White Wine Butter Sauce

 

Naughty Peppermint Hot Chocolate

8 cups whole milk

1 can sweetened condensed milk

3 c. bittersweet or semisweet chocolate chips

¼ cup crème de menthe or vodka

1 Tbsp vanilla extract

1 Tsp peppermint extract

¼ Tsp salt

Whipped cream, crushed candy canes to garnish

Directions: Combine milk, sweetened condensed milk, chocolate chips, crème de menthe / vodka, vanilla extract, peppermint extract and salt in a slow cooker. Cover and cook on high 2 hours, whisk vigorously halfway through to help chocolate melt. 

Switch to warm for serving. Garnish with whipped cream and crushed candy canes. 

Pair with: Signature White Chocolate Bread Pudding (Of course we were going to end our suggestions with our favorite dessert!)

 

Thanksgiving, Christmas and the New Year couldn’t come fast enough! We’re ready for an excuse to drink fancy cocktails before noon and forget about real world responsibilities for a little while. Come visit us this holiday season for any of the yummy entrees we mentioned!
